MUDRA FOR OBESITY -
an article from a Palmist table.
I happen to be a forced
listener ( 😐
) for all the ‘Health talks’ my daughter gives in her Public Health care centre,
and my source of perennial ideas to keep writing about Mudras is got from here!
So… the recent talk was to make the people ,be aware of the health hazards due
to over weight and what ,one can do to prevent it, and lead a healthy , disease
free life.
An analysis of National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data
shows that obesity is more prevalent among women than men. Income, age, and
regional differences appear to play a weighty role too. Nearly one in 16 women
and one in 25 men are obese in India. And Indians have only been growing fatter
over the past 15 years, shows data published in the fifth and latest round of
the NFHS.
REASON:
Obesity is an increasingly common problem because for many
people modern living involves eating excessive amounts of cheap, high-calorie
food and spending a lot of time sitting down, at desks, on sofas or in cars.
There are also some underlying health conditions that can
occasionally contribute to weight gain, such as an underactive thyroid gland
(hypothyroidism), although these type of conditions don’t usually cause weight
problems -- they're effectively
controlled with medication.
Now having all the statistics and other theoretical information
in place, let us see, what we can do in action, to prevent/ manage this ,
growing issue of concern.
PRACTICAL
AIDS:
Eat a balanced, calorie-controlled diet as recommended by
your general physician or weight loss management health professional (such as a
dietitian).
Join a local weight loss group.
Take up activities such as fast walking, jogging, swimming
or tennis for 150 to 300 minutes (two-and-a-half to five hours) a week
Eat slowly and avoid situations where you know you could be
tempted to overeat
SPIRITUAL AID:
The most famous Mudra, which many of us would have heard, these days. Yes, The Surya Mudra.
Now , diving IN to this very useful Mudra…
Mudras – How many ?
Mudras have been an integral
part of many Hindu and Buddhist rituals. They are used extensively in Yoga,
meditation and dance. Across various disciplines it is said that , there exist
close to 399 mudras. These are also referred to as Hasta Mudra or Anguli Mudra.
(Hasta –hand/ Anguli- fingers)
When can you do Mudra?
Mudras
can be performed anytime, although sitting in the lotus position in regular
fixed time and focusing on the healing would be more beneficial. Although mudras can be used for healing
certain ailments, regular practise of mudras will contribute to your overall
good health and can be used as a preventive measure. Continuous practice of the
mudras will create, minute changes in your body using the fingers of your
hands, which trigger certain healing processes within the corresponding body
part.
Mudra – Concept :
A Mudra (Sanskrit मुद्रा,
"seal", "mark", or "gesture") is a symbolic or
ritual gesture in Hinduism and Buddhism. While some mudras involve the entire
body, most are performed with the hands and fingers. A mudrā is a spiritual
gesture and an energetic seal of authenticity employed in the iconography and
spiritual practice of Indian religions. In yoga, mudras are used in conjunction
with pranayama (yogic breathing exercises), generally while seated in
Padmasana, Sukhasana or Vajrasana pose, to stimulate different parts of the
body involved with breathing and to affect the flow of prana in the body.
Mudras & the Panch Bhoota:
What
is Mudra?
The physical body is made up of five elements namely – Air, Water, Fire, Earth
and Aakash (ether – the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body).
Imbalance of these elements disrupts the
immunity system and is the root cause of all human disease(s) – both mental as
well as physical.
Ancient Sages found out that - deficiency in
any of these elements can be corrected, through Mudras.
When a finger representing an element is
brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance.
Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. Mudras start electromagnetic currents within
the body which balance various constituting elements and restore health. The
joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body.
Ancient sages have
designated the five fingers for these five elements viz.,
* Thumb Fire
* Index Air
* Middle Aakash
* Ring Earth
* Little Water
